泉记熟食Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee @ 105 Hougang Avenue 1
Tried this stall a few times already and I think they should be featured. Reason is they observe the basic rules of frying hokkien mee or char kway teow… which is they double fry the kway teow or noodles. That means they fry the first round, keep the whole lot aside then fry again for the individual plates. Secondly, they make the belachan chilli themselves… and it’s not your regular dark red sambal belchan… it’s the traditional light coloured type. Blends very well to the taste of the noodles! I like! Thirdly, for a Grade A(Super clean and hygenic) stall, the noodles taste really good.

The stall is on the right, hidden in between a small walkway... very very bad location... but the food is good!
Rating: 4.5/5. Would have been a 5 but the couple doesn’t smile at all… Been there 3-4 times… but same face… ;P
Taste: Very good. It’s the broth that makes the difference. Broth fry together with the egg and noodles, then mix with the specially made chilli, heaven! They have Char Kway Teow also but not as good as this. That’s why specialty stalls still the best.
Portion: Slightly above average.
Price: $3, $4 or $5.
RTE: Yup! Many times already!
Location: 105 Hougang Avenue 1, #02-37. Come out from lift, turn left.
Sims Place Market Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee
Chanced upon this old couple selling Fried Kway Teow & Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee while I was at Sim Place Market the other day. This place is at Blk 49 Sims Place, unit #01-26 and it’s my regular haunt. Loads of good food here and I will feature them one by one whenever I can.
The stall is very clean although it’s only Grade B… but I prefer Grade B stalls cos usually taste better than Grade A ones.. haha… So I ordered a plate of Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee for $3 a plate.

Serves a lot of regulars which spark my curiosity to try this stall

Quite a big plate

Taste: Sambal is very nicely fried. They use the thinner version of the Chor Bee Hoon which I like cos it absorbs the prawn broth nicely. Not very salty but just nice. You can tell they have been putting a lot of work in the broth for frying. If only it is fried a little longer with a little more broth, I believe the taste will be a lot better.
Portion: For $3, the portion is good. Ingredients are substantial and most importantly, there were 3 medium sized prawns and they are whole prawns unlike some other stalls they halved their prawns and prolly give you only 3 halves.
RTE: Definitely. Must support the old couple lah. They are like 60+ already still doing hawker. Will try the Char Kway Teow soon and put here.
